The powerhouse team from the USA took team gold yet again to maintain their 100% record since Reining became part of the World Equestrian Games. Star of their team was Shawn Flarida with the 12 yr old Palamino stallion RC Fancy Step as they scored the highest individual mark in the team event of 227. However in the individual competition disaster would strike the American ace as a leather broke during his run which resulted in Flarida touching the saddle to regain balance thus incurring a 5 point penalty; this would let in his teammate Tom McCutcheon on his 6 yr old Quarter Horse stallion Gunners Special Nite whose excellent score of 228 may well have been too good for Flarida even if he had had a clean run. McCutcheon would finish an impressive 5 points clear of his nearest rival teammate Craig Schmersal with former World Champion Duane Latimer grabbing the bronze for Canada.
